About Athens

Things to do in Athens

(Most of the proposed places are within the center of Athens - see map)

1. Monastiraki
Monastiraki

The Old Town market district Monastiraki is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Though cheap souvenirs dominate its storefronts, there's plenty on offer for sophisticated tastes too! The homonymous metro station is located in the heart of the region.

2. Acropolis of Athens
Acropolis of Athens

Many of Ancient Athens' most important buildings were erected in the Acropolis to protect them from invasion. Ruins they may be, but most still look pretty good for their age! Acropolis, with Parthenon, Erechteion and the Temple of Athena Nike, are located on the top of the hill a few minutes’ walk from the metro station "Acropolis".

3. Parthenon
Parthenon

More than the ruins of an old temple, the Parthenon is an icon of Western civilization, making it the site of Athens' most essential tours!

4. Erechtheion
Erechtheion

Built on the site where legend tells Poseidon and Athena competed to be the city's patron god, the Erechtheion was actually considered more holy than the Parthenon in its time!

5. Temple of Athena Nike
Temple of Athena Nike

Nike is the Ancient Greek word for victory, and the prominently placed Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis was built to aid the Athenian Empire's wars against Sparta. It didn't work!

6. Acropolis Museum
Acropolis Museum

Of course, the Acropolis is now mostly in ruin – a monument to Athens' former glory – but almost 4,000 objects excavated from the area can be seen at the Acropolis Museum! A few minutes’ walk from the metro station "Acropolis".

7. National Archaeological Museum of Athens
National Archaeological Museum of Athens

Widely considered to be one of the best museums in the world, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens boasts many of Greece's most important artifacts, from the prehistoric age to Late Antiquity. You can take the bus 608 right in front of the Zografou gate at NTUA and get off at Museum station. You can also use the Metro , get off at the Omonoia station and use the bus 035.

8. Syntagma Square
Syntagma Square

Named after the Greek Constitution of 1844, the grand Syntagma Square at the foot of the Old Royal Palace has been the epicenter of Greek politics ever since! "Syntagma" Metro station will take you directly to the heart of the city.

9. Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens
Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens

In ruins, but once considered the epitome of Doric architecture, the important temple Olympieion was home to the gold Statue of Zeus – one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A few minutes’ walk by "Syntagma" or "Acropolis" Metro station.

10. Plaka
Plaka

This historic district at the foot of the Acropolis is also known as the "Neighborhood of the Gods." Plaka is a great place to wander around and maybe even see an archaeological dig! Take a walk from "Monastiraki" metro station or "Syntagma" Station or even "Acropolis" Station.

11. Athens National Garden
Athens National Garden

Visit Athens National Garden, an oasis in the center of the city with more than 500 different species of plants, trees, birds and animals. Just around the corner from Syntagma Square.

12. Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium is a classical cultural and touristic monument of Greece and one of the most significant monuments not only for Athens, but for the whole Greece. It is one of our city’s most popular touristic attractions and one of Athens’ landmarks.

Its rich history is directly connected to the Modern Olympic Games as from their revival in 1896 until the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. It is also the place from where the Olympic flame sets up its journey to the cities of the Olympic Games, both Winter, Summer and Youth. Visit the world symbol of Sports in Athens - the finish venue of the authentic venue of Marathon course.

13. The Athenian Riviera: Island Living in the City

Along the capital’s southern coast, less than an hour’s drive or tram ride from the center, you’ll find it all – a rich history, a sense of cosmopolitan nonchalance and dozens of beautiful beaches with clear-blue waters.

Your excursion to the southern suburbs begins from Faliro and reaches Sounion. The tram connects Athens – from Syntagma Square – with the southern suburbs, and is a leisurely way to get to the coast. Route T3, which reaches from Faliro until Voula, is the most enjoyable way for you to get to know the coastline. Along the way, you’ll encounter seaside neighbourhoods and destinations full of temptations for you to stop and check out: Faliro, Alimos, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonissi, Saronida, Anavyssos are all perfect for swimming or a stroll, with shopping, dining and more.
